TDE in association with ARUP delivered a sustainable
and green design for the historical retrofit of the
Dana Hall building on the central campus at the University
of Michigan. Sustainable and green features implemented
were composting toilets, waterless urinals, photovoltaic
roof panels, along with architectural elements of wheat
board ceiling panels, recycled timber, certified harvested
timber, recycled steel, and sustainable carpet.
As an alternative to a conventional HVAC system, the
design team implemented a Chilled Ceiling system with
conditioned ventilation air, incorporating the reuse
of the existing perimeter steam convection heating system.
In addition to receiving a complete mechanical makeover,
all the electrical power, lighting, IT, audiovisual,
acoustical, plumbing and fire protection were completely
upgraded and brought up to current codes.
The project received the LEED Certification Gold rating
for the historical retrofit. This building is a testament
to the University’s willingness to pursue a strong
environmental vision and serve as a role model for other
leading Educational Institutions.
