Timmons Design Engineers was commissioned by Freebairn-Smith
& Crane to provide Mechanical, Plumbing and Sustainable
design for the new Ridge Vineyards Montebello Winery
administration building in Cupertino, CA. The HVAC design
integrates energy efficient technologies including radiant
heating and cooling throughout the office space in which
the conditioning hot and cold water are provided by
a closed loop geothermal heat pump circulating water
underground. The building is also designed to maximize
daylight usage and incorporates automated external mechanical
louvers in the clerestories to shade from direct sun
glare and heat gain on very warm summer days. The cooling
design of the building is intended to maximize passive
natural ventilation through operable windows, clerestories
and large bay doors throughout the building, which will
be supplemented by the cooling effect of a cooled radiant
floor. To meet the clients goal of minimizing environmental
impact, a grid-intertied photovoltaic system designed
by TDE will be installed to provide solar electricity.
