Timmons Design Engineers was commissioned to provide Sustainable Consultation and design for the development of a two story, 16,238 sq. ft. West Elm retail store located on Shellmond Avenue in Emeryville, California. The building will be a Flagship store, designed as a green prototype with the intent to achieve Williams Sonoma’s first LEED™ certification. The prototype will utilize sustainable technologies to benchmark energy savings for integration in future developments.
The proposed mechanical system will include an overhead displacement/demand control ventilation system. New packaged rooftop units will be sized to provide all cooling, heating and ventilation needs to the spaces. As a means of energy conservation, the units will be equipped with both supply and exhaust fans which will be set with a variable frequency drive (VFD). The VFD will control the supply and return airflow to provide only enough air to meet space demand. Electrical systems will include power and distribution, as well as multi-level switching and occupancy sensors in order to reduce energy usage and comply with Title-24. Other systems proposed include a photovoltaic rooftop array, pole-mounted wind turbines, daylighting design, photocell daylighting sensors, a green roof, and a green wall.
